Penn State Football: Nittany Lions Add Former Rutgers Assistant As Consultant

by on March 03, 2017 12:50 PM

According to a report by Fox's Bruce Feldman the Penn State coaching staff won't be getting any bigger this offseason, but will be adding at least one former assistant in a consulting role.

The new face on campus, former Rutgers assistant Phil Galiano who last served as the tight ends coach and special teams coordinator for the Scarlet Knights in 2015. In addition Galiano worked previously as Rutgers' director of recruiting operations. Prior to to his third stop at Rutgers he spent time as special teams coach in the NFL with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers from 2012-13.

In previous time spent in Piscataway, Galiano spent time working with tight ends and the defensive line.

What Galiano's role for the Nittany Lions will be is unknown but this isn't the first time that Franklin has turned to outside sources for a new set of eyes. Former Saints' head coach Jim Haslett was hired as a consultant during Franklin's second season at the helm, watching practice but offering no actual hands-on coaching.

It stands to reason thought that Galiano will work with the special teams unit, perhaps specifically returns. While the kicking and punting game proved to be a strength for the Nittany Lions in 2016, Penn State ranked 87th with just over 19 yards per kickoff return.
