Penn State Football: Nittany Lions Land Safety Jonathan Sutherland

by on July 25, 2016 12:30 PM

Penn State football made it an even 10 commits for the 2017 recruiting haul and the second commitment of the week as Alexandria (Va.) Episcopal Academy four-star safety Jonathan Sutherland made the call on Sunday.

Sutherland choose the Nittany Lions over the likes of Boston College, Michigan, Wisconsin and Syracuse by the time his recruitment made it to its final days. Sutherland comes in a 6-feet, 195-pounds and joins DJ Brown out of Georgia as the only other true commitment in the secondary. He's also the fifth 4-star commit of the 2017 class for Penn State and the sixth defensive player in the class.

According to the 247Sports Composite rankings, Sutherland is rated the nation’s No. 23 safety and No. 10 recruit overall in the state of Virginia. Sutherland is originally from Canada.

“Coach (James) Franklin and his coaching staff are amazing on and off the field,” Sutherland told the 247Network. “I fit in well in their secondary and they see me playing over the top and down in the box.”

Sutherland is the second commitment since Penn State's big recruiting weekend last week at the annual Lasch Bash. He joins Brelin Faison-Walden who committed on July 20. Faison-Walden is listed as a safety on the 247Network composite rankings but is projected to be a linebacker when he makes it to Happy Valley.
