Penn State Football: Nittany Lions Look to Impress on Pro Day

by on March 11, 2013 1:57 PM

Over 25 different NFL teams were on hand Monday morning to take in Penn State's Pro Day as a handful of Nittany Lion seniors looked to make a good impression on potential future employers.

While the likes of Michael Mauti, Gerald Hodges, Jordan Hill, and Matt Stankiewitch all had the chance to prove their worth already at the NFL Combine, players such as Stephon Morris, Matt McGloin and Mike Farrell were in front of NFL scouts for the first time since the end of the season.

Penn State's new open door policy for NFL scouts under Bill O'Brien has seen plenty of NFL teams walking the sideline during practice, meaning both players and teams are well acquainted with each other by the time the draft process comes around.

Here are notes an quotes from some of those involved with the process Monday morning.

Matt McGloin (QB)

  • Quote"I thought it went really well and I know other guys were pleased with their performance as well. Ever since the season ended I've just been working to get ready for today, trying to get quicker, cut down a little bit weight-wise and try and get as fast as I can and make sure my mechanics and footwork are good. It only takes one team to fall in love with you."
  • Height: 6'1
  • Weight: 207
  • Plans moving forward: "I'm going to sit down with my family and map out my plans moving forward. I plan on staying here to work with Coach Fitz and get ready for draft day. We've gotten feedback from teams but I want to keep that between me and my agent."

Matt Stankiewitch (OL)

  • Quote: "The only thing I did today was the broad jump, I got 8'2 where at the combine I got 7'8. Some of the numbers I got at the combine weren't going to change much and you always run the risk of injury or anything. I just knew that I could jump a lot better than I did at the combine. I got very good feedback, saw some scouts that I saw at the East/West game and the combine. They just say that I'm doing a really good job."
  • Pro Day Broad Jump: 8'2"
  • Combine Broad Jump: 7'8"

Michael Zordich (FB)

  • Quote: "I appreciate Coach O'Brien getting me out there to show teams how versatile I can be. It's always good to show teams that I am versatile as a fullback and to get out on special teams as well. I felt good today, felt loose, I couldn't tell you what my times are but I felt good running them."
  • Plan moving forward: "I plan on staying here in town, lifting with the guys, running, and waiting for a phone call. Hopefully I get a call and have a chance to show teams what I've got. It's awesome to be around for one last hurrah with the guys."

Jordan Hill (DL)

  • Quote: "A lot more stress was off, at the combine it was the first full 40 that I had run. I had practiced but my knee wasn't ready yet. I should have waited but I'm too much of a competitor not to try. I'm 100% now, I feel good and ready to go. Today I felt good about my times and numbers."
  • Combine 40: 5.23
  • Pro Day 40: 4.97
  • Combine Broad Jump: 8'7"
  • Pro Day Broad Jump: 9'3"

Gerald Hodges (LB)

  • Quote: "I just wanted to be a little sharper on the drills, at the combine I tripped on one of the drills so I wanted to come out here today and look a little more polished. I felt real good about how I did and a lot of scouts said so as well."
  • Vertical: 35 1/2 inch
  • 20-yard shuttle: 4.25 seconds

Stephon Morris (DB)

  • Quote: "When I called up the president of the combine they told me I missed it by two votes. So it was good to know that I didn't miss by 10 because that meant teams were still looking at me. So I just worked hard and prepared to get ready for today."
  • 40-yard dash: 4.23 and 4.3

Other notes:

  • Former Nittany Lion Derek Moye caught passes and worked out Monday morning.
  • Former Nittany Lion Shane McGregor and sophomore Steven Bench both threw for receivers
  • Linebacker Michael Mauti did not speak with the media following his workout.
  • Bill O'Brien claimed that his 40-yard dash was timed with a sundial.
