Penn State Football Notebook: Devon Smith Out with Lower Left Leg Injury

by on April 04, 2012 6:38 PM

Penn State held its fifth spring practice of the season and third with full pads Wednesday on the outdoor fields adjacent to Holuba Hall, but not everyone fully participated.

Most notably, senior wide receiver Devon Smith was seen riding a motorized cart. He has an undisclosed lower left leg injury, but Penn State should have an update later on his status.

Also held out of practice:

  • Linebacker Khairi Fortt (knee). I was told by PSU spokesman Jeff Nelson that the injury is not considered serious. Fortt had his right knee wrapped in a tan bandage.
  • Cornerback Curtis Drake (unknown)
  • Cornerback Adrian Amos (groin)
  • Offensive guard Mark Arcidiacono (knee)
  • Cornerback Mike Wallace (unknown)
  • Fullback Pat Zerbe (unknown)
  • Cornerback Derrick Thomas (unknown)
  • Defensive tackle Evan Hailes (unknown) Note: Hailes had issues with blood clots last season.

Of course, senior linebacker Mike Mauti is also being held out of contact drills for the spring as a precautionary measure following ACL rehab.

Massaro at 80-85 percent

Senior defensive end Pete Massaro, speaking with reporters on a conference call Wednesday morning, said his knee feels 80-85 percent healthy.

Massaro, coming off a second ACL injury last season, is participating in all spring drills and lined up with the first-team defense Wednesday.

"It's going to take time, you know?'' Massaro said. "My goal is to return to the form that I was in the spring of [2011].'' That year, he made 11 starts and recorded eight tackles for loss.

First-team units

As Massaro reminded us Wednesday, Penn State has had only three full-pad practices under its belt. So, what you saw with the first-team offense and defense by no means is what you'll see in the season opener Sept. 1.

Nevertheless . . .

First-team offense

QB - Matt McGloin

RB - Silas Redd

LT - Mike Farrell

LG - Miles Dieffenbach

C - Matt Stankiewitch

RG - John Urschel

RT - Adam Gress

TE - Garry Gilliam

WR - Justin Brown

WR - Alex Kenney

WR - Shawney Kersey

First-team defense

DE - Sean Stanley

DT - DaQuan Jones

DT - Jordan Hill

DE - Pete Massaro

LB - Gerald Hodges

MLB - Glenn Carson

LB - Jamie Van Fleet

CB - Stephon Morris

CB - Jesse Della Valle

Saf. - Malcolm Willis

Saf. - Jacob Fagnano

Some observations: The first-team offensive line was the same five guys that we saw last Monday in the spring's opening session.

The right tackle, Adam Gress, has been talked up by head coach Bill O'Brien and strength and conditioning coach Craig Fitzgerald for his efforts during winter workouts.

"I've seen a lot of improvement in Adam Gress,'' Massaro said. "He's made significant strides in the offseason, he's a lot stronger. He's kind of emerging as a force at tackle."

Bench Attends Practice

Another quarterback was on the sidelines at practice Wednesday.

This one, however, will play for Penn State.

Georgia's Steven Bench soaked in the atmosphere with his family. Bench said he sat in on a team meeting earlier and will meet with academic advisors Thursday to choose his summer classes.

As you may remember, former Maryland quarterback Danny O'Brien took in Penn State's practice last Monday, then chose to attend Wisconsin two days later.

Also in attendance were Class of 2013 prospects Buddy Brown (linebacker, New Jersey) and Paul Harris (wide receiver, Maryland)
