Penn State Football: Ohio State Game Set for 7:30 Kick on ABC

by on October 19, 2020 11:40 AM

Penn State will take on Ohio State in a game not quite like any other in Beaver Stadium history as the two teams will hit the field in front of no fans on Halloween for a 7:30 p.m. kick on ABC.

The Nittany Lions' home opener is the first of four [possibly five depending on the location of the late-season TBD cross-divisional game] contests in State College that will take place as part of a strange nine-week dash to the finish line to pull of a Big Ten season amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

Beyond the oddity of the setting, Penn State will look to avenge losses in three-straight competitive games against the Buckeyes, Penn State giving one of the best programs in the nation more of an annual test than most teams. Two of the last three meetings have been decided by just a single point while the 2019 clash in Columbus 28-17 Buckeye victory.

Penn State has scored at least 24 points in each of the last four meetings between the two teams, last winning in 2016 following a blocked field goal return by Grant Haley. The 2018 contest was famously decided on a late fourth-and-five that Penn State failed to convert.

The Nittany Lions open the season this weekend against Indiana in Bloomington. Kick is slated for 3:30. Penn State will face Maryland back at Beaver Stadium in Week 3 before heading on the road to Nebraska.

In many ways the pending clash between two of the Big Ten's premier programs is a loss for Penn State in terms of opportunity to play a marquee event in front of fans and recruits. It will however answer -at least in part- the question of how much some 110,000 people wearing white, impact such a high-profile meeting.
