Penn State Football: Parsons Tabbed Big Ten Linebacker Of The Year, Other Nittany Lions Honored

by on December 03, 2019 5:10 PM

Penn State linebacker Micah Parsons has been named the best linebacker in the Big Ten, the first sophomore to win the award.

So far this season Parsons has racked up 95 tackles, 11 tackles for a loss and three sacks as well as three passes defended and two forced fumbles. Aside from the forced fumbles, all of those marks are career-highs for the Harrisburg native who continues to improve as his high anticipated career continues.

Parsons was named a Pro Football Focus All-American earlier on Tuesday. He now has 177 career tackles, not yet within Penn State's Top 20 career list. The all-time tackles mark is headed by Dan Connor who had 419 from 2004-07.

Parsons became the third Nittany Lion to win the award along with Michael Mauti and Mike Hull, who picked up the honor in 2012 and 2014, respectively.

Over a year ago Penn State defensive coordinator Brent Pry stood on that same Beaver Stadium field during the summer and paused for a moment to think. The sun shining, the highly touted defensive end turned linebacker yet to play a single snap in college. Everything was ahead of them, nothing yet set in stone.

"Micah has no idea how good he can be," Pry said quietly.

It appears he's starting to figure that out.

Parsons leads a handful of Nittany Lions to pick up end of season honors from the conference. Defensive end Yetur Gross-Matos was a unanimous first-team selection by both the media and coaches. End Shaka Toney picked up second team honors by the coaches as well, the head men also selecting defensive tackle Robert Windsor and linebacker Cam Brown for third-team honors. Cornerback Tariq Castro-Fields was a third-team selection by the media.

Without much surprise at all, Ohio State defensive end Chase Young was named the league's defensive player of the year.

The Big Ten will round out its award season on Wednesday on the offensive side of the ball. Parsons is also a Butkus Award finalist given to the nation's top linebacker, that award will be announced sometime between now and December 10th.
