Penn State Football: Position Preview: Tight End

Who's Gone:

A long career finally in the books and Kyle Carter said goodbye to the blue and white after the 2015 season as the final member of the Supa Six. Carter is the only departure within this unit but the second straight to have made a meaningful impact at tight end after Jesse James graduated and headed to the NFL the year prior.

Carter's departure leaves the door open for some news faces, especially in Joe Moorhead's allegedly tight end friendly offense.

Who's Still Here:

The most likely to replace Carter at this moment in time are probably the likes of freshman Danny Dalton, or PA native sophomore Nick Bowers. Mike Gesicki returns this year looking for a rebound season after struggling in 2015. While Brent Wilkerson is also still on the roster, his pending sexual assault case makes him an unlikely candidate to find a significant role on the offense anytime soon, let alone a spot on the roster by the time the season gets here. Tom Pancoast and Jonathan Holland are also in the mix but have some work left to do to find their place in the offensive mix.

What To Watch For:

This unit can do just fine if Gesicki can manage to find his consistency again. It seems likely that he can do that, but how the tight ends fit into the new offensive system remains to be seen. Moorhead will have his work cut out for him finding ways to use all of Penn State's offensive talent, but there are opportunities for new faces to step into the light at tight end.

The Short Version:

With Wilkerson likely out of the mix this is Gesicki's unit to take control of and with a second shot he should do just that. Dalton could be a new face to find a home on offense, but that will depend largely how well his summer goes when he gets on campus. And as always blocking and being physically prepared to play at the Big Ten level goes beyond simply being talented.
