Penn State Football: Pro Day -- Measuring Success
by on March 17, 2010 6:11 PM

Nearly 20 former Penn State football players and representatives from all 32 National Football Leagues descended upon the Lasch Football Building and Holuba Hall Wednesday for Penn State’s Pro Day.

On hand were two current pros — former Nittany Lions Derrick Williams of the Detroit Lions and Tamba Hali of the Kansas City Chiefs. They returned to their alma mater to watch the spectacle.

They were not the pros the NFL scouts and assistants came to see. The most prominent of the NFL talent scouts on hand was barrel-bellied defensive coordinator Rob Ryan of the Cleveland Browns. Ryan’s dad Buddy is a former Philadelphia Eagles head coach and brother Rex is the current head coach of the New York Jets.

Among those working out on Pro Day were:

  • At least three former Nittany Lion football players who last played at Penn State in 2008: safety Anthony Scirrotto, kicker Kevin Kelly and snapper Larry Federoff. Scirrotto was drafted as a free agent after the 2008 season and spent a few weeks on the New York Giants’ practice squad in 2009. He injured a hamstring in January 2010, but seemed to be at full strength — his three cone drill time would have placed him among the very top finishers at the NFL Combine in Indianapolis in late February.
  • A Nittany Lion who last played in 2007 — quarterback Anthony Morelli, who was encouraged by his wife, Adrian Squire, a Lady Lion basketball player in 2005-07, to continue his quest to play in the NFL. Morelli, who will be 25 in June, prior to the work appeared both fit and relaxed, and sounded confident -- certainly not the mental image many Penn State fans hold of the starting Lion QB in 2006 and ’07.
  • A very probable first-round draft pick in a defensive Jared Odrick, happy after running a 4.92 in the 40.
  • A faster-than-expected quarterback in Daryll Clark, who reportedly ran a 4.6 in the 40. Clark’s dad, the other Daryll, was on hand, wearing a basketball Celtics green T-shirt.
  • Two big-time bench pressers in tight end Mickey Schuler, who benched 225 pounds 28 times, and offensive lineman Aki Poti, the offensive lineman who said he was digging the California-like sunshine to the tune of 26 reps.
  • Players who weren’t too happy with their performances, like A.J. Wallace in the bench press. “Aw, just 14,” he said.
  • A Cajun special teams player in Michael Mauti, wearing a beard and sporting a 4.67 40 time, which was “better than I expected.”
  • A PSU record-setting punter, Jeremy Boone, who was the last of the group to be looked at — and outdoors at that. The NFL scouts had Boone punt in sets, judging his ability to direct his punts all over the field. Boone and Kelly were the only players to work out outside. Much of the scout work took place in Holuba Hall, where the cone drills, position work and the celebrated 40-yard dash were held.
