Penn State third-string quarterback Rob Bolden is making an official visit to LSU this weekend and may transfer there, a source told The Times Picayune Sunday.

He has been granted a release from his Penn State scholarship, sources said Sunday night, and his name has been removed from the roster.

Bolden's presence this season would help LSU quarterback depth immensely, according to the newspaper. The Tigers’ coaching staff is confident in Zach Mettenberger as a first-year starter but his top backups are redshirt freshmen Stephen Rivers and Jerrard Randall.

Bolden, a junior, has made 16 career starts for Penn State with 165 completions in 328 attempts for 2,045 yards with seven touchdowns and 14 interceptions.

Bolden was a four-star recruit coming out of high school in Orchard Lake, Mich., but has struggled mightily at Penn State and has threatened to transfer on at least two previous occasions.

Asked to comment on Bolden's status at Big Ten Media Days this week, coach Bill O’Brien said: "At this point he's with us, and that's all I can comment on."

Other Nittany Lions considering possible transfers in wake of the harsh NCAA sanctions handed down Monday include junior Silas Redd (USC), redshirt junior punter/kicker Anthony Fera (Texas), redshirt sophomore linebacker Mike Hull (Pitt), junior tight end Kevin Haplea (Florida State), redshirt freshman offensive lineman Ryan Nowicki (Washington) and junior middle linebacker Khairi Fortt (California or Connecticut).
