Penn State Football: Shoop And University Settle Lawsuit

by on February 02, 2018 11:05 AM

Penn State and former defensive coordinator Bob Shoop have settled their lawsuit out of court , the university announced on Friday morning.

Terms of the settlement were confidential. According to a university statement, "Coach Shoop recognizes obligations under his employment contract with Penn State."

According to a filing dismissing the case in Pennsylvania's U.S. Middle District Court, both parties are responsible for their own costs related to the case.

"Both Coach Shoop and Penn State are pleased to bring this matter to an amicable resolution," the statement said. "Coach Shoop wishes continued success for the Penn State football program and remains grateful for the support he received from the coaching staff, support staff and the fans while he was at Penn State. Penn State recognizes that Coach Shoop was an integral part of the coaching staff during his tenure at Penn State and wishes him the best in his future endeavors."

Penn State claimed Shoop  owed the university $891,856 for leaving the Nittany Lion football program before his contract ended to take the defensive coordinator position at the University of Tennessee in January 2016. According to Penn State's complaint, a buyout clause required Shoop to pay liquidated damages of 50 percent of his $850,000 annual base salary for each year remaining if he resigned before his contract ended on Feb. 15, 2018.

Shoop countersued Penn State claiming he left the Nittany Lions because of "intolerable" working conditions and the university breached his contract. Shoop claimed to have experienced "a hostile, negative work environment," and was seeking at least $75,000 in damages.

After coming to Penn State with Coach James Franklin in 2014 and spending two seasons as defensive coordinator, Shoop held the same position in 2016 and 2017 at Tennessee. Volunteers' head coach Butch Jones was fired in November 2017 and in December Shoop was hired to lead the defense at Mississippi State under new head coach and  former Penn State offensive coordinator Joe Moorhead.
