Penn State Football: Six Nittany Lions Set To Enroll Early

by on December 21, 2017 11:35 AM

For Penn State football few offseason personnel decisions loom larger than the ability to enroll a handful of newly signed players early. Rather than coming to campus in the summer they can join their team in January.

The results often can be the difference between playing and watching during a freshman campaign. An extra few months in the weight room, a few extra meetings with coaches, and more time to bond with teammates. It's no small advantage, and for six Nittany Lions they will get that chance.

According to James Franklin, those players will be linebacker Micah Parsons, tight end Zack Kuntz, linebacker Jesse Luketa, linebacker Nick Tarburton, cornerback Trent Gordon, and safety Isaiah Humphries.

“We’ve got six guys who should be here in a couple weeks,” Franklin said. “As you guys have seen, we’ve played freshmen. They’re going to have an opportunity to compete. I do think the chances and the likelihood increase obviously the longer that they’re here and in the system.”

Overall the selections make sense. Penn State will enter the 2018 season with questions at linebacker and in the secondary. Replacing tight end Mike Gesicki will also likely come by committee as well. So all six players will get a head start in areas where the Nittany Lions are looking to replace key names.

It may not be those players who get to campus early that ultimately become the primary option at each position, but they'll be that much closer to being ready when the time comes.

“Kuntz I think is very similar in a lot of ways to [Mike] Gesicki — high school wide receiver, probably a little bit further along as a tight end than what Mike was,” Franklin said. “Him graduating early is really going to help. If he gets on the field, great, but he doesn’t have to get on the field as a freshman like Mike did.”
