Penn State Football: TaxSlayer Bowl Postgame Notes

Check out some of the more interesting stats and accomplishments following Penn State's loss to Georgia on Saturday.


  • Penn State is (28-16-2) all-time in bowl games, tied for No. 4 in the nation in post-season wins. The Nittany Lions, Georgia and Oklahoma entered the 2015-16 bowl season tied for third at 28.


  • Linebacker Jake Cooper made his first career start and is the fourth true freshman to start for Penn State this season.

  • Cooper is also the 15th first-time starter for the Nittany Lions this year.

  • Nick Scott served as a first time captain today, joining Christian Hackenberg, Angelo Mangiro, Von Walker and Anthony Zettel.

  • Penn State had five seniors starters: TE Kyle Carter, C Angelo Mangiro, DE Carl Nassib, CB Trevor Williams, DT Anthony Zettel


  • Chris Godwin became the third player in school history to register 1,000 receiving yards in a season, joining Allen Robinson (2013, 2012) and Bobby Engram (1994, 1995) as players to accomplish the feat. It is the fifth 1,000-yard performance in a season in program history.

  • With 133 yards, Chris Godwin posted his fifth 100-yard receiving game of the season.

  • Godwin moved in second place on Penn State’s season receiving yards list (1,101 yards). He also moved into 17th place on the career receiving yardage chart (1,422), passing Ted Kwalick (1,343; 1966-68) for position.

  • Godwin also climbed into fourth place on the season receptions chart (69) with six catches today.

  • Godwin became Penn State’s career leader in bowl receiving yards with (273) in two games, passing Bobby Engram’s 272 yards.

  • Godwin owns the No. 2 (140 yards) and No. 3 (133 yards) bowl receiving yardage marks in Penn State single game bowl history.

  • Quarterback Christian Hackenberg is the fourth player in program history to throw for 500 career yards in bowl games, joining Tony Sacca, Todd Blackledge and Kerry Collins. Hackenberg has 510 passing yards in two career bowl games.

  • Freshman quarterback Trace McSorley threw his first career TD pass, 17 yards to Geno Lewis.

  • Wide receiver Geno Lewis made his third TD catch of the season and the eighth of his career.

  • Lewis has made TD catches in his career in three NFL stadiums (MetLife, M&T Bank, EverBank), as well as Yankee Stadium and Croke Park in Dublin, Ireland.

  • Freshman running back Saquon Barkley finished the season 16th on Penn State’s season rushing list with 1,076 yards.

  • Sophomore wide receiver DaeSean Hamilton moved into 15th place on Penn State’s career receiving yards chart with 1,479 yards. He passed Chafie Fields (1,437; 1996-99) for the spot.


  • Linebacker Troy Reeder missed the game due to an injury.

  • Marcus Allen forced his second career forced fumble in the third quarter.

  • Anthony Zettel had one sack on the day to move into a tie for seventh on Penn State’s career list, tying Rich McKenzie (1989-92) with 20.0 sacks.

  • Zettel moved into sole possession of 10th place on the school career TFL list with 38.0.

  • Freshman Jake Cooper made a season-high six tackles.


  • Kicker Tyler Davis finished the season perfect, making all eight of his field goal attempts and all 11 of his extra points this season.
