Penn State Football: White Out Set For Ohio State

by on April 17, 2018 12:30 PM

Penn State announced on Tuesday morning, perhaps in a hope to give a soggy and overcast State College something to look forward to, that the Nittany Lions will host Ohio State this season in front of a White Out crowd.

The news comes as very little surprise to anyone who has even a partial understanding of Penn State football and the annual tradition's connection to the biggest home game of the year.

Even so, the news marks the continuation of what has become the Big Ten's marquee showdown over the past several seasons. While Penn State fans can probably abandon the crusade to become Ohio State's primary "rival" rather than Michigan, it's hard to argue that the Nittany Lions haven't given Ohio State a better fight over the last half decade.

In total, four wins over the past 14 meetings is the most by a Big Ten team over that span, Michigan State coming up just shy with three wins, most recently in 2015.

To be fair, in the past four games Penn State has come up short three times, but the contests have been decided by a single point, three points and double overtime. The biggest loss, a 38-10 loss in 2015 still saw Penn State driving inside the Ohio State 15 down 21-10 early in the fourth quarter. A failed conversion on 4th-and-2 would be the Nittany Lions' undoing and the catalyst to a final score not quite indicative of how close the game had been.

As far as Michigan? The Wolverines have beaten Ohio State once in the past 14 meetings on an average of 13.3 points a game, and aside from an overtime loss two seasons ago, have lost double figures in three of the previous four showdowns between the two teams.

So regardless of whatever you want to call it when Penn State and Ohio State get together, it has been must-watch TV, and this season looks to be no different.
