Penn State Football: Williams And Zettel Pick Up Weekly Honors

by on September 15, 2014 1:15 PM

It was a defensive effort for Penn State in last weekend's game against Rutgers and the Big Ten conference and Athlon Sports took notice -- honoring cornerback Trevor Williams and defensive tackle Anthony Zettel.

Williams was named the Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week after pulling down two interceptions against Rutgers on Saturday night. Zettel was named the conference's Player of the Week by Athlon Sports.

Penn State is 3-0 to start the season for the first time since 2009 and for the first time when playing two of its first three games away from Beaver Stadium since 1978.

Williams' first interception of the night against Rutgers was also Penn State's first of the season. His second interception in the third quarter would lead to a 72-yard drive that was punctuated by a Sam Ficken field goal, cutting the Rutgers lead to 10-3 late in the quarter.

A starter in every game this season, Williams has made seven solo tackles, is tied for first in the Big Ten with two interceptions and has one pass break-up.

Williams joins placekicker Sam Ficken (UCF) and freshman wide receiver DaeSean Hamilton (UCF) as Penn State’s Big Ten Player of the Week honorees so far this season.

Zettel tied his career-high with three tackles for loss for minus-11 yards against Rutgers this weekend. He recorded four solo tackles and had a sack for eight yards on the final Rutgers final possession, which ended with a Ryan Keiser interception.

In his first season at tackle after two seasons at defensive end, Zettel leads the Big Ten with seven tackles for a loss (2.33 average) and is tied for fourth nationally in TFL. He also is averaging 1.0 sacks per game, good for a tie for third in the conference and 28th nationally.
