Senior Chase Berger will captain the Penn State men's hockey team the program announced on Thursday morning. Senior Kevin Kerr and junior Brandon Biro will serve as the alternates.

“It is an honor to be named captain of this team and to represent this outstanding university by wearing the ‘C’,” Berger said in a press release. “My teammates and I will do everything in our power to make our fellow Penn Staters proud of this hockey team.”

Berger served as an alternate captain last season and becomes the sixth Nittany Lion captain in program history replacing recent graduate James Robinson ‘18. Berger hasn't missed a game since coming to campus in 2015 appearing in all 115 games over the past three seasons. Berger finished the 2017-18 campaign tied for fifth on the team with 27 points on 11 goals and 16 assists and currently ranks third on the all-time scoring list with 89 career points while his 37 goals and 52 assists rank second and fifth, respectively, in program history.

Both Kerr and Biro will be wearing a letter for the first time in their Penn State careers once the season gets underway in October. Kerr has been plagued by injuries the past two seasons, but remains one of the top defenseman in the entire Big Ten when he’s on the ice. The senior has appeared in 82 games in his career scoring six goals while adding 36 assists for 42 points.

Biro has been a constant presence on the ice throughout his career. The junior has appeared in 76 games scoring 15 goals while adding 36 assists for 51 points including a career-year as a sophomore in 2017-18 with 31 points ranking second on the team.

All three roles are the product of a team vote and approved by coaches.
