Penn State Hockey: Hamilton Finalist For Big Ten Defensive Player Of The Year

Senior defenseman Trevor Hamilton is among the three finalists for Big Ten defensive player of the year the conference announced on Wednesday.

Hamilton leads all defensive players in the Big Ten with 29 points so far this season, good enough for ninth best in the entire country. Heading into this weekend's semifinal meeting with Notre Dame in South Bend, Hamilton six goals and 23 assists to his name, with 79 shots on goal this season.

Along with Hamilton, the three finalists include Notre Dame's Jake Evans and Jordan Gross. The Fighting Irish also have goaltender Cale Morris nominated for player and goalkeeper of the year. Notre Dame coach Jeff Jackson is up for coach of the year as well.

Hamilton is the only Nittany Lion nominated for postseason honors by the conference. Forward Andrew Sturtz is fifth in the conference in points this season, leading the league in short handed goals with three this year.

According to the latest NCAA bracketology, the Nittany Lions look to be facing Denver in the first round of the Allentown regional, playing the winner of Minnesota/Cornell. The actual field of 16 and bracket itself will be announced in just under two weeks.
