Penn State Hockey: Holstrom Likely To Miss Remainder Of Season With Injury

by on March 04, 2015 6:00 AM

Penn State forward Taylor Holstrom will likely miss the remainder of the season with an unspecified lower body injury according to head coach Guy Gadowsky.

Holstrom was injured after an awkward fall late in Penn State's 5-3 loss to Ohio State on Saturday. It was a moment Gadowsky said turned the game as the Nittany Lions coped with the loss in realtime despite leading the game 3-2 at that point.

While details about the injury haven't been released, Gadowsky confirmed Tuesday that Holstrom will not be available any time soon.

"Not good right now," Gadowsky said of Holstrom's status moving forward. "We won’t know more until late. I know he’s out this weekend. I know that’s for sure. It’s hard to tell because it’s not broken but he can’t put weight on it. It’s not good. It’s not broken but it’s not good. He’s not playing the rest of the season. I know that.

"You have a guy that has been playing so, so well, and meant so much to the identity of our team. Disappointing that we crumbled after his injury but I understand it. Everybody knows how much he means to the team, not just on the ice but to the team. You could see how much the guys felt about it."

For the immediate future Penn State will move David Goodwin to the center position on the top line with Tommy Olczyk at the forward position along the wing in place of Holstrom. The Nittany Lions host league leading Michigan on Friday and Saturday before closing out the regular season next weekend at Minnesota.

Assuming Holstrom does in fact miss the remainder of the season he ends the 2015 campaign with 7 goals and 26 assists in just 29 games. Ending the year with an injury is an unfortunate turn of events in a season that saw Holstrom at the center of nearly every major twist and turn.

“The response [to Holstrom leaving the game Saturday] you saw was genuine. I think everybody really knows how much he means to the team, not just on the ice but to the team. You can see how the guys feel about him,” Gadowsky said.
