Penn State Hockey: Jones Picks Up First Star Honors From Big Ten

by on October 25, 2016 12:50 PM

For two straight nights Penn State hockey held its own against No. 3 Notre Dame and was rewarded in turn with a tie and an overtime victory.  While Penn State's road success against one of the nation's elite was a team effort, goaltender Peyton Jones was a key part of that success and the Big Ten has taken notice.

On Tuesday the freshman goalie was named the Big Ten men’s ice hockey First Star of the Week. This marks the second consecutive week the rookie has earned league recognition after garnering Third Star accolades on last week’s report.

Jones stopped 56 of 61 shots turning in a .918 save percentage during the weekend. The freshman stopped a career-high 30 shots during Friday's 3-3 tie before collecting 26 saves the following night during a 3-2 overtime victory. The victory marked the highest-ranked team Penn State has defeated in their brief 5-year history.

Jones also collected his first collegiate point as he assisted on the game-winning overtime goal on Saturday. The rookie registered a 2.37 goals against average over the two games against the fourth ranked offense in the nation which came into the weekend averaging 4.75 goals per contest.

So far in the Blue and White Jones is 3-0-1 record for the Nittany Lions and currently ranks fourth in the Big Ten in both goals against average (2.40) and save percentage (.916). Those marks also place him 21st and 26th in the nation, respectively.

Penn State returns to action this weekend as they host Canisius for a pair of contests on Friday and Saturday evening with a 7 p.m. face-off each night.
