Penn State Hockey: Nittany Lions Come Up Short 3-1 To Air Force Saturday Night
Penn State fell to Air Force on Saturday night 3-1 after a much stronger effort from the Nittany Lions than the night before.
Freshman forward Ricky DeRosa scored a goal in his first collegiate game but the Nittany Lions gave up three, third period goals to fall for the second straight night at Cadet Ice Arena.
Sophomore goalie Matthew Skoff stopped 32 shots for Penn State, while Air Force netminder Jason Torf made 33 saves. Air Force out shot Penn State, 35-34, and went 0-for-2 on the power play. This mark is particularly noticeable after the Nittany Lions struggled to stay out of the penalty box in each of their first two games,
Penn State finished 0-for-4 with the man advantage.
Air Force out shot the Nittany Lions by a 15-12 margin in a scoreless first period. Penn State dominated the second period, outshooting Air Force, 15-10, but neither team reached the back of the net.
Penn State and Air Force entered the third period scoreless but two goals from George Michalke and a tally by Cole Gunner gave the Falcons a three-goal lead in the third period before DeRosa scored with 2:46 left in the game. Skoff gave up two goals on the night for Penn State with Air Forces' final score coming on an empty net.
The Nittany Lions will return to action Friday, Oct. 25 when the host RIT at Pegula Ice Arena for a 7 p.m. faceoff. Following their matchup with the Tigers, the Nittany Lions will take on Vermont at Philadelphia’s Wells Fargo Center Saturday, Oct. 26. The second annual Philadelphia College Hockey Faceoff gets underway at 5 p.m.
