Penn State Hockey: Nittany Lions Complete Sweep With 4-1 Victory Over Wisconsin

by on January 17, 2016 10:00 AM

On paper, this is how it should have gone. Despite a upset win over North Dakota earlier in the year Wisconsin was not supposed to win.

And on Saturday the Nittany Lions made sure that didn't happen.

Despite out shooting Penn State 13-6 in the first 20 minutes of play, it was Curtis Loik banging home a loose puck in front of the open net that gave Penn State a 1-0 lead just 7:38 into regulation.

Like so many times before, the Nittany Lions didn't wait long to push the lead even farther forward as Andrew Sturtz scored in transition sniping a shot past Matt Jurusik over the shoulder just five minutes later to make it 2-0.

Wisconsin did its best to respond, 5:55 into the second period as Luke Kunin capitalized on a shorthanded opportunity but that was all the Badgers had in the tank for Saturday. Eamon McAdam was strong in his return to net making several strong saves throughout all three periods of play.

With 12:52 to go Eric Scheid corralled a bouncing puck down the boards and slotted it home for his second point of the night to make it 3-1 and give the home squad a comfortable third period margin. Scheid added another 10 minutes late on a shorthanded breakaway to give Penn State the final 4-1 margin.

McAdam finished the night with 39 saves as Penn State improved to 15-4-3 on the year.

The Nittany Lions travel to Ohio State next weekend for a two game series.
