Penn State Hockey: Nittany Lions Fall 4-1 To Minnesota As Talvitie Brings Home Gold, Barratt Silver

by on January 05, 2019 11:32 PM

After a fairly complete performance against the Gophers on Friday night en route to a 4-2 victory, the Penn State couldn't replicate that effort or offensive finishing, falling 4-1 to Minnesota on Saturday evening.

Peyton Jones made 23 saves on the night as Penn State struggled to control play like it had just 24 hours prior. Chase Berger put Penn State ahead 1-0 in the first period but Minnesota tied the game just minutes later. From there it was largely all Gophers and a 3-1 lead after two periods was all it took to secure the victory.

An empty net goal made it 4-1 late in the third despite multiple chances for the Nittany Lions to pull within a goal throughout the final frame.

But not all news was bad news for the Nittany Lions. Across the border in Canada, Finland beat the United State's 3-2 with a late third period goal to give Penn State forward Aarne Talvitie the program's first goal medal at the World Junior Championship. Penn State forward Evan Barratt settled for silver after centering the United States' second line.

Penn State will get both Talvitie and Barratt back this coming weekend as the Nittany Lions open their home slate for the second half to the year hosting Michigan State next Friday and Saturday.

The Nittany Lions and Spartans are the bottom two teams in the Big Ten standings, although just six points separate the Nittany Lions from the top of the standings in the seven-team conference.
