Penn State Hockey: Nittany Lions Fall 5-1 To No. 2 Minnesota
Penn State couldn't slow down a focused No. 2 ranked Minnesota attack falling 5-1 in the first game of a road series.
The Nittany Lions would open the scoring just 3:12 into the game. Forward/defenseman Kenny Brooks would pounce on a rebound to put Penn State up 1-0. Penn State would have a chance to extend the lead minutes later but a shot would go just over the bar with the Nittany Lions looking to pull off a shocker.
Minnesota didn't wait long to respond to the early Penn State lead, shelling goaltender Matthew Skoff with shots and rushes to the net. The Gophers would tie the game 7:55 into the first period and score again four minutes later to take a 2-1 lead. The Gophers added another goal with just under four-minutes to go in the period to go up 3-1.
The Gophers would score in the opening minute of the second stanza while on the man advantage to take a 4-1 lead. The final goal of the night was scored 12:30 into the second period thanks to a shorthanded tally.
Skoff made 31 saves but simply couldn't stop a swarming Minnesota attack. Adam Wilcox would stop 18 shots on the Gopher end as Penn State struggled to produce quality scoring opportunites against the nation's No. 2 team.
Both teams will take the ice again on Saturday night at 7 p.m. The game will air on the NBC Sports Network.
