Penn State Hockey: Nittany Lions Fall To No.4 But Pick Up Record First Place Votes

Penn State hockey fell to No.4 in the latest USCHO poll but picked up the most first-place votes in program history receiving six in this week's poll.

The shakeup happened following a chaotic weekend in college hockey, the then-No.2 Nittany Lions splitting a road series against Ohio State falling on Friday but picking up a convincing 4-2 victory on Saturday night.

In addition, former No.1 Minnesota-Duluth tied and lost to Colorado College at home. The Bulldogs fell in this week's poll to No. 3 but managed six first-place votes. Last week the consistent hockey powerhouse collected 47 first-place.

Denver now leads the way at the top of USCHO poll with 27 votes having gone 14-4-4 so far this season while Harvard comes in just behind at No.2 with 11 votes. Both teams were previously ranked 3rd and 4th respectively in last week's poll.

Penn State is currently ranked No.1 in the PairWise rankings which simulates the NCAA tournament committee's selection process and it not a votes based ranking.

Ultimately this won't be the last mix in the rankings with plenty of hockey left to be played. The Nittany Lions return home this weekend to face Michigan State before once again hosting Ohio State. The Buckeyes rose to No.10 nationally after the weekend split against Penn State.

Most of all, the USCHO poll does not factor into the 16-team postseason selection process.
