Penn State hockey continues its rise up the rankings, closing out the out of conference slate with an 11-1-1 record and a No. 8 ranking nationally in Monday's USCHO.com poll.

The Nittany Lions are coming off of a fourth straight sweep with two weekend victories over Arizona State. Penn State's current 11-game undefeated streak is the best in the nation as the Nittany Lions prepare for conference play next weekend against Michigan.

Penn State's No. 8 ranking is the highest in program history after the Nittany Lions entered the Top 10 for the first time last week. Penn State's offense is ranked the best in the nation with 4.77 goals per game while the Nittany Lions' defense, led by freshman goalie Peyton Jones is fourth in the country giving up just two goals per game.

Individually freshman Denis Smirnov is ranked second in the nation in total points with 22, just five behind the national lead. Smirnov is third in the nation with 15 assists, just two behind the nation's led in that category as well.

As far as pure goalscoring it's sophomore Andrew Sturtz who has scored 10 goals in 11 games, just four goals off the top mark in the country.

Penn State now turns its focus to the off week prior to hosting Michigan at Pegula Ice Arena to open Big Ten play, the Wolverines are ranked No.16 in the nation.
