Penn State Hockey: Nittany Lions Tie No. 3 Notre Dame 3-3

Penn State hockey couldn't hold on to a late second period 3-1 lead, settling for a well earned 3-3 tie against the No. 3 ranked Notre Dame Fighting Irish in South Bend on Friday night.

The Nittany Lions opened the scoring just 2:16 into the game as Nikita Pavlychev slammed home a loose puck just six seconds into the first power play of the game to take a 1-0 lead.

That 1-0 lead turned into a 1-1 tie game with just under five minutes to go into the first period as Peyton Jones made a save on a shorthanded break away but the wrap around attempt was eventually stuffed into the net. The game went into the first intermission at a 1-1 tie.

The second period was more of the same with back and forth action and multiple power play opportunities for both teams but it was Penn State scoring twice in the final 10 minutes of the frame that put the Nittany Lions up 3-1. First it was Dylan Richard with 10:35 gone by and then once again with just minutes to go in the frame to make it 3-1.

Notre Dame didn't let the two-goal margin last though as the Irish cut back into the deficit with 18:47 gone by to make it 3-2 after 40 minutes of play.

A one goal game was finally tied by Notre Dame with just over seven minutes gone by in the period as the puck too a massive redirection over Jones' shoulder, finding the back of the net. Both Penn State and the Irish had chances to take the lead and the go-ahead goal in the final minutes but neither team could find the back of the net. Notre Dame took a man advantage into the overtime period but Penn State's penalty kill dominance continued into the extra frame. The Nittany Lions couldn't convert on their own overtime man advantage as the game ended.

Jones finished the night with 30 saves in net and Penn State has now killed off 25 straight power plays to open the season.

Penn State improves to 2-1-1 on the year and will face the Irish again on Saturday night at 7PM on NBCSN.
