Penn State Hockey: Penn State Gets Extra Point In 3-3 Tie Against Wisconsin

by on January 06, 2018 11:30 PM

Penn State and Wisconsin racked up 20 penalties, 67 shots and a boatload of unfriendly looks and shoves as the Nittany Lions managed to grab the extra point in a 3-3 tie and shootout win on Saturday night.

As expected, the Badgers were a much more competent version of themselves following a 5-1 loss on Friday night, coming out of the gates firing, a five minute major penalty to Trevor Hamilton an early momentum boost for Wisconsin.

But it was Liam Folkes scoring 13:11 into the period to open the scoring before Wisconsin answered back just over a minute later to tie the game after 20 minutes.

The second period was a continuation of a physical and penalty heavy style of play that resulted in more 4-on-4 play than nearly anything else. With both teams seemingly on the edge of breaking through, Penn State did first as Sam Sternschein put Penn State ahead 2-1 in the final minute of the period.

Then it was Chase Berger 56 seconds into the final frame to push the margin to a two-goal lead.

Wisconsin hardly blinked, answering three minutes later, and with just under two minutes to go Peter Tischke blasted a shot through traffic and past Peyton Jones to tie the contest at 3-3.

Penn State would finish out regulation on the power play but failed to convert. The Nittany Lions seemingly winning the game early in overtime as Andrew Sturtz powered home a rebound in front of the net, but the goal was waved off due to goaltender interference. The Nittany Lions would go on the advantage yet again, but failed to convert.

Folkes once again was the hero against Wisconsin and his lone shootout goal as Jones stopped all three shots gave Penn State the pivotal extra point in the standings.

Penn State improves its unbeaten streak to 10 games and will face Ohio State next weekend. The Buckeyes are ranked No. 6 in the PairWise rankings.
