Penn State hockey is having an eventful and historic Saturday as incoming freshmen Evan Barratt and Cole Hults and returning sophomore forward Denis Smirnov and commit Aarne Talvitie have all been selected in the NHL Entry Draft.

Barratt was the first off the board early in the day as the Chicago Blackhawks tabbed the forward with the 90th pick in the third round of the draft. He most recently played for the United State Under-18 team, winning the Junior Gold Championship in 2016-17.

While he came close, Barratt didn't quite go high enough to unseat Eamon McAdam as Penn State's highest ever draft choice, the former Nittany Lion goaltender was drafted 70th overall by the New York Islanders in the 2013 Draft.

Hults was selected in the fifth round by the LA Kings with the 134th pick in the draft and most recently played with the Madison Capitals, a USHL affiliate.

Smirnov was drafted by the Colorado Avalanche with the 156th pick in the sixth round, he led the nation in scoring for a freshman with 47 points during Penn State's historic 2016-17 season.

Aarne Talvitie was drafted shortly after Smirnov by the New Jersey Devils with the 160th pick, Talvitie is currently the captain for Finland's U18 team. He is scheduled to join the team for the 2018-19 season.

With the draft still ongoing, Penn State currently boasts six current or soon to be incoming players with NHL ties. Forwards Nikita Pavlychev and Brett Murray were selected by the Penguins and Buffalo Sabres respectively in previous drafts.
