Penn State Hockey: Talvitie Likely Out For Season Per Finnish Report

It appears Penn State hockey will be without forward Aarne Talvitie for the remainder of the season if news out of Finland is accurate.

According to a Finnish report, Talvitie's will miss the next six to nine months following knee surgery. The Finnish captain took a heavy hit into the boards during the gold medal game at the World Junior Tournament last week and immediately struggled to the bench.

He attempted to play shifts later in the game but was unable to do so.

Talvitie is still in Finland and will reportedly travel back to the United States this coming Saturday. A program spokesperson told StateCollege.com that the program cannot yet confirm the report until Penn State's medical staff has seen Talvitie in person and evaluated him further.

"Yes, this is a tough blow," Talvitie told Yle Sports. "It is a pity that such a thing came in the middle of time. It's great that I got the World Championship pulled out and got a gold medal. That makes it much easier."

"We're trying to get the knee up and running as quickly as possible," Talvitie said, loosely translated. "Let's hope that I will have a good time in the beginning of next season. Here is a good time now to do a little something else. You can concentrate a bit more on your studies. It is good that there is more to do than hockey."

Talvitie managed 16 points for Penn State in 17 appearances for Penn State racking up 11 assists. He is a New Jersey Devils draft choice.
