Penn State Hockey: Third Period Blows Nittany Lions Past ASU 7-0

Two of the youngest teams in NCAA Division I took the ice on Friday night and the Nittany Lions came out on top 7-0 as Penn State beat Arizona State in the desert.

It was a scoreless first period for both teams as Penn State controlled much of the play, Chris Funkey in net for the Nittany Lions picking up the 15 save shutout in the process.

The goal-free game continued for nine minutes into the second period before Evan Barratt broke the deadlock for his first of the night. The Chicago Blackhawks draft choice made it two goals in the period a few minutes later to push Penn State ahead 2-0.

From there it was an avalanche of goals in the final period as Penn State's offensive persistence finally paid off in a big way as the Nittany Lions poured on the goals from the likes of Erik Autio and Nikita Pavlychev before the final horn sounded. By the end of the night Penn State had managed 49 shots on goal, outshooting ASU 20-4 in the final period.

The Nittany Lions will return to the ice on Saturday night to look for a series sweep. The shutout victory a key positive for a Penn State team that has struggled to keep the puck out of the net in the opening 12 games despite being two goals shy of the national lead in goals scored.

Penn State is now 6-7 on the year.
