Penn State Hockey: Wolverines Too Much In 6-1 Loss

by on March 13, 2016 6:00 AM

In many ways you could simply copy and paste last night's game story with a few variations.

For one, Michigan scored first on Saturday night. A 2-on-1 opened the scoring with 13:33 to go in the first period as the Wolverines opened the shot count 4-1 with an early offensive flurry.

Just over two minutes later Eric Scheid made the most of an opportunity, firing in a shot that was deflected but ultimately found the back of the net to tie the contest midway through the first period.

But then Michigan's offense took hold like it has so many times this year against so many different teams. Two goals in the final 3:31 of the first period pushed the Wolverines ahead 3-1 at the first intermission. While Penn State took a 1-1 tie into the break on Friday night, the hole was already looming large with 40 minutes of play to go. Michigan taking an 18-10 lead into the break as well.

And the offensive output continued, Michigan picking up another tally with 13:42 to play in the period. Just minutes later Ricky DeRosa's game misconduct penalty only added to the obstacles as Penn State -already short forwards- skated just three full lines for the remainder of regulation.

Another Michigan goal while Penn State skated 5-on-3 made it a 5-1 margin and for the second straight night Eamon McAdam was replaced in net having made 23 saves on the evening. After two periods the Wolverines led the game 5-1 and a whopping 40-18 in the shot department.

A final goal in the third period gave the game its final 6-1 score.

But more importantly it likely put the final nail in the coffin for Penn State's postseason hopes. A Big Ten Tournament win would give the Nittany Lions an automatic bid, although that seems unlikely. Regardless, Penn State's 20 win season will go down far and away as the program's most successful with or without the postseason.

The Nittany Lions finish the year in third place in the Big Ten's six team conference.
