Penn State Reports No COVID-19 Cases Following First 100 Student-Athlete Tests

Penn State Vice President of Intercollegiate Athletics Sandy Barbour says that as of June 30, 102 Penn State athletes have been tested for COVID-19 with none of those tests returning positive.

The total does not include the latest student-athletes to arrive on campus this week during Penn State’s phased return program. Roughly 70 tests were administered over the past several days to members of the men’s and women’s soccer teams as well as the women’s volleyball team.

The athletic department is currently in its third phase of campus return, with the football and men’s and women’s basketball teams being among the first to arrive at the beginning of June.

According to Barbour, Penn State will test all players and staff upon their return to campus and subsequently test players who appear symptomatic as needed. Those testing results will be updated every two weeks and made public throughout the course of the summer up until at least the complete return of students on campus in August.

“That’s our protocol for the summer, and we’re continuing to look at the science, the conditions around us, and as the university settles on what they’re going to be doing for the fall, certainly, kind of fold up under that as well,” Barbour said.

“We’re also going to need to then take some different approaches as it relates to competition and travel for student-athletes as we arrive at that point.”

All testing measures are supplementary to already implemented practices such as social distancing, contract-tracing, temperature checks and other health guidelines implemented by the state of Penn State’s own medical team.

Barbour says student-athletes are permitted to go home following their return but would be subjected to the same initial testing and quarantine period following their return to campus.
