Penn State Shares Attendance Figures for Paterno Viewings

on January 31, 2012 4:09 PM

Nearly 40,000 people attended the University Park viewings last week for Joe Paterno, according to information shared by Penn State.

The closed-casket public viewings, held for about 10 hours Tuesday and nearly four hours Wednesday, drew some 25,000 to 27,000 people and roughly 12,000 people, respectively, spokeswoman Lisa Powers said.

In total, she wrote via e-mail, "there were just under 40,000 people who came through when you include public and private" viewing events.

The Pasquerilla Spiritual Center hosted the viewings. People queued up in an often-lengthy line, sometimes waiting an hour or longer to pay their respects.

Attendance at "A Memorial for Joe," the public memorial service held Thursday at the Bryce Jordan Center, was projected in the range of 12,000 to 13,000. (While the Jordan Center's maximum capacity is closer to 16,000, some seats were blocked off to accommodate physical arrangements for the service.)

Paterno family members and the university athletics department were primary figures in organizing that event, which ran more than two hours and was carried live on television and radio.

Powers said this week that costs for the memorial service have not been fully tabulated. She said those expenses will be covered by the athletics department, which receives much of its annual revenue from the football program.

Paterno, the former longtime football coach, was 85 when he died Jan. 22 at Mount Nittany Medical Center, having suffered lung cancer.
