Editor's Note: This is the 18th of a 19-part daily series that seeks to answer the questions surrounding the 2010 Penn State football team. Check back tomorrow for the final part. Thursday, we asked: "What's the Secret to Joe's Employee Retention?" Today, we ask: "What Should I Look for at the Blue-White Game?"
-------------------------------
Nittany Lions fans have plenty of questions about Saturday's Blue-White Game. That's OK. So do the coaches.
We'll try to answer the most common queries, as we take a look at the Top 20 questions about Penn State's annual football scrimmage, which kicks off at 2 p.m.:
1. The game's still free, right? Yep, no admission to the game or for parking.
2. What's the weather going to be like? Here's what State College-based AccuWeather has to say: High of 60 degrees on Saturday, with a kickoff temperature of about 56. Realfeel will be 66. Some sunshine will give way to clouds with a little rain in the afternoon. Winds up to 4 mph.
3. Is quarterback Kevin Newsome any good? He can run; we saw that somewhat in 2009, as well in the Coaches Clinic scrimmage a few weeks ago, when he tore off a 25-yarder. Reports on his passing skills are mixed, at best. QB coach Jay Paterno reports that the Lion quarterbacks have done more passing the past few weeks than any other spring in recent memory.
4. Should Matt McGloin be the starter at QB? We won't find out on Saturday. He looks to have a good arm and has poise in the pocket. But he could go 25 for 30 with 300 yards and he still wouldn't clinch the No. 1 spot. Don't count on anyone's performance at quarterback securing the starting job.
5. Does that freshman, Paul Jones, have a shot at starting? No. Not at all.
6. Besides quarterback, which position is the biggest question mark? Make that question marks. The Nittany Lions lost starters at both left and right offensive tackle. Look for Lou Eliades, a starter at guard last year, and Quinn Barham to start at tackle. It looks like DeOn'tae Pannell, who started three games at tackle in 2009, has been shifted to guard – if only for a little while.
7. Speaking of the offensive line, will Stefen Wisniewski play guard or center? Yes.
8. Will Evan Royster play? Maybe a little. Maybe. But don't expect more than a carry or three. He is the Nittany Lions' most valuable player, so why risk an injury?
9. Who will have a big day at running back? Easy answer is Stephfon Green, who will get a fair share of carries early. But I think he won't play a good deal either. I like Silas Redd, who had runs of 18 and 14 yards in the Coaches Clinic scrimmage. Curtis Dukes could have a breakout game. And Joe Suhey, a veteran fullback, is sneaky good and may get a free extra carries for being a good soldier during the regular season.
10. Just how good are all of those linebackers? Better than you would think. There are a bunch of them. They won't be as good as Bowman, Lee and Hull. But they will be closer in ability than folks think.
11. Who's the best linebacker? Tough call. Fun ones to watch are Michael Yancich, who goes full bore every player, and Gerald Hodges, who is a great athlete. Both are likely to play with the second unit. The starting trio will be Bani Gbadyu, Nate Stupar and Chris Colasanti.
12. Will we see anyone who can punt the ball? Yep, but we can't exactly say who. Two place-kickers may get a shot – power-blaster Anthony Fera, who may not play after getting pinched recently for underage drinking, and State High grad Russell Nye, a transfer from Temple whose dad Greg is the Penn State men's golf coach.
13. How do they replace not one, but two good tight ends (Mickey Shuler and Andrew Quarless)? With two untested entities, Garry Gilliam and Andrew Szerba, likely to be the starter. This is a bigger hole than folks realize.
14. Who are all those freshmen who graduated high school early to start classes at Penn State in January? They are the aforementioned Jones and Redd; linebackers Dakota Royer, Khairi Fortt and Glenn Carson, defensive tackle Evan Hailes; tight end Kevin Haplea; and defensive end Kyle Baublitz.
15. Is that really Chaz Powell at cornerback? It is. The Lions' No. 3 receiver last season has spent the spring in the secondary, contending with last season's nickel back, Stephon Morris, for a starting position.
16. Who's not playing that is any good? Starting safety Drew Astorino, a leader on the defense, and super-quick linebacker Michael Mauti. Both are coming back from surgery.
17. Penn State plays a ton of defensive linemen. Who should I watch? Defensive tackle Ollie Ogbu and defensive Jack Crawford are both returning starters. Ogbu is really solid, and Crawford is fun to watch rushing the quarterback. Good games by Brandon Ware and Devon Still will be further evidence of Larry Johnson Sr.'s handiwork.
18. Where will Joe Paterno be during the game? The coach will be doing some color commentary in the radio booth with Steve Jones and Jack Ham. And expect him to spend some time in the ESPN2 booth with Brent Musberger, Kirk Herbstreit and Matt Millen. And he might even end up on the sidelines a bit, too.
19. What time can I get autographs? The session is from 12:30 to 1:15 p.m. on the Beaver Stadium turf. But you better line up early at stadium gates A, B, C and E. They open at noon and you'll need 4.4 speed to rush to the front of the autograph line.
20. Is the game on TV? Yep. ESPN2 live at 2 p.m. with a replay on the Big Ten Network at 5 p.m.
