Penn State Still Paying Curley, Not Covering Sandusky's Legal Bills
by on November 07, 2011 9:31 PM

Penn State athletic director Tim Curley, on administrative leave as he faces criminal charges, is being paid while he is on that leave, a university representative confirmed.

Spokeswoman Lisa Powers shared the detail Monday night in response to a StateCollege.com inquiry.

Just after midnight Monday morning, Penn State announced that Curley and Gary Schultz, the senior vice president for finance and business, are stepping aside as they fight criminal charges.

Both men have been charged with perjury and failure to report. Prosecutors have said the men lied to a grand jury and failed to report properly an alleged sexual attack on a child.

Attorneys for Schultz and Curley have said their clients are innocent. The administrators appeared Monday in Harrisburg for arraignment.

The cases against them are closely linked to the emerging case against former Penn State football assistant coach Jerry Sandusky.

In her e-mail message Monday night, Powers also noted that Schultz will continue to receive compensation that he's owed as part of a retirement package. He had retired as a senior vice president in 2009.

Schultz returned to the position on an interim basis earlier this year, after his successor departed.

Penn State reported over the weekend that it's paying Schultz's and Curley's legal bills, as the allegations against them concern how they acted as university employees. However, Powers noted Monday, the university is not paying Sandusky's legal bills.

She also elaborated somewhat about the university's decision to ban Sandusky from campus, reported over the weekend. Powers wrote that "senior leadership of the university suspended his use of any facilities."

She did not address a question concerning the timing of the ban.
