Penn State Student Sustains Severe Injuries in Vehicle-Pedestrian Crash on South Atherton Street

A 28-year-old pedestrian was injured and taken by LifeFlight helicopter after being struck by a vehicle on the 800 block of South Atherton Street early Tuesday night.

Police said the pedestrian, who was identified as a Penn State international student, sustained severe blunt force trauma and was flown to UPMC Altoona.

The student appeared to be walking westbound across Atherton Street from Logan Avenue when they were struck by a Subaru Forester being driven southbound by a 90-year-old State College man, police said.

The crash happened at 5:04 p.m. and the road was closed until about 7:20 p.m. between Hamilton Avenue and Westerly Parkway while State College police investigated and the scene was cleared.

Centre LifeLink EMS and Alpha Fire Company assisted at the scene. Fire police were dispatched to the area to set up a landing zone for the helicopter.
