Penn State Trustees 'Outraged,' Plan for Investigation
by on November 09, 2011 7:19 AM

Penn State trustees are "outraged by the horrifying details" in a grand-jury report released last week, the board announced late Tuesday night.

In a prepared public statement, the board said it will appoint a special committee to undertake a full "investigation of the circumstances that gave rise to the grand-jury report."

"This special committee will be commissioned to determine what failures occurred, who is responsible and what measures are necessary to insure that this never happens at our university again and that those responsible are held fully accountable," the statement goes on. "The special committee will have whatever resources are necessary to thoroughly fulfill its charge, including independent counsel and investigative teams, and there will be no restrictions placed on its scope or activities."

The grand-jury findings -- and related statements from Attorney General Linda Kelly -- focus on criminal allegations that longtime Penn State football assistant coach Jerry Sandusky sexually abused children. On a related front, two university administrators have been charged with perjury and failure to report.

"Penn State has always strived for honesty, integrity and the highest moral standards in all of its programs," the Tuesday-night trustees statement reads. "We will not tolerate any violation of these principles. ... We promise you that we are committed to restoring public trust in the university."

The full text of the statement is posted here.

Meanwhile, a source has told StateCollege.com that support for university President Graham Spanier and football Coach Joe Paterno is waning among some trustees.
