Penn State Women's Basketball: Lady Lions Capture Holiday Tournament with 85-73 Victory Vs. Cal-Northridge
NORTHRIDGE, Calif. — The Penn State Lady Lions struggled for the second straight night but came away with another win while playing at the Radisson Chatsworth Holiday Tournament at Cal State Northridge.
Penn State defeated the host Matadors in the championship game, 85-73, erasing a 17-point deficit in the first half to trail by just six at the break. Penn State picked up the defense in the second half to secure the tournament title and used its depth, playing nine of the 10 players that suited up, to wear down the hosts down the stretch of the game.
Senior Nikki Greene had a great night by scoring 21 points and hauling down 20 boards, which tied a career high for Greene. Fellow senior Alex Bentley was again solid with 19 points, eight assists and three steals. Maggie Lucas once again led Penn State in scoring with 23 and was named the tournament Most Outstanding Player. Greene was named to the All-Tournament team.
Coach Coquese Washington said after the game that her team struggled, but finding a way to pull out victories in tough environments is good to build character and was pleased to come away with two wins in the tournament.
Penn State is now 5-0 on the season and heads right back on the road next week when it travels to Miami on Thursday evening to face the 23rd-ranked Hurricanes. The Lady Lions will not be back in the Bryce Jordan Center until Dec. 2, when they host Fairleigh Dickinson.
