Penn State Women's Volleyball Picks Up All-America Honors

Penn State women’s volleyball saw a handful of Nittany Lions earn AVCA All-American honors on Wednesday, with seniors Haleigh Washington and Simone Lee leading the way as first-team selections.

Washington, who also won the prestigious Senior CLASS Award, accomplished the rare feat of being named a three-time All-American. Lee, the Big Ten Player of the Year, heads into Thursday’s Final Four in Kansas City on the heels of her second consecutive selection.

Making her debut as an All-American, sophomore libero Kendall White took home second-team recognition from the committee, whose chair is Michigan State head coach Cathy George. The Nittany Lions swept the Spartans on Saturday in Rec Hall to advance to the NCAA semifinals for the 13th time in program history.

Outside hitter Ali Frantti — the AVCA Division I National Freshman of the Year in 2014 — garnered honorable mention for the third season in a row. Joining her on that list were setter Abby Detering and right side Heidi Thelen, both of whom turned in excellent senior campaigns.

With the exception of honorable mention nods, Penn State now counts 34 different AVCA All-Americans, which ranks third nationally behind only Nebraska and Stanford. Half of this year’s 14 first-team selections will compete in the Final Four.

First serve between the top-seeded Nittany Lions and Cornhuskers on Dec. 14 in the Sprint Center is set for 7 p.m. ET on ESPN.
