Penn State/Akron Blog: Penn State Wins 21-3

by on September 06, 2014 11:00 AM

It's Week 2 for the Nittany Lions as Penn State return home to take on Akron in the first game of the James Franklin era in Happy Valley.

Akron is led by Terry Bowden who is in his third season at Akron and 21st season as a head coach. Bowden is 7-18 while at Akron including close losses at Michigan and Miami last season. The Zips are led on the field by quarterback Kyle Pohl who passed for 304 yards and four TDs last week in a 41-0 victory over Howard.

Penn State comes off of a last second 26-24 victory over UCF in Dublin, Ireland and saw redshirt freshman DaeSean Hamilton make 11 catches, a freshman record at Penn State. Quarterback Christian Hackenberg also set his own team record, passing for 454 yards --a single game record at Penn State.

Kick is slated today for Noon on ABC or ESPN2.

Fourth Quarter: Penn State wins

It took four quarters, but Penn State's offense finally found its stride going on a quick 2-play, 60 yard drive and score thanks to a 44-yard pass to a wide open Jesse James that gave Penn State a 21-3 lead. The catch was James' second touchdown of the day. A dose of wildcat with Akeel Lynch got the ground game going 7 carries for 45 yards on the day. Penn State finishes out the day with just over 100 yards passing and Hackenberg throws for 319 yard to break the 300 yard mark for the second straight week.

Third Quarter: Penn State leads 7-0

Penn State starts slow to open the half and Akron drives within field goal range but a 10 play, 79 yard drive over the span of 5:26 puts Penn State up 14-3 on a 13 yard pass to Jesse James. Hackenberg has 252 yards passing so far.

Second Quarter: Penn State leads 7-0

A lethargic second quarter ends with no additional points scored. Penn State ends the opening half with 23 yards not the ground and with Hackenberg completing 12 of 24 passes for 156 yards. The Nittany Lion defense has forced four sacks on the afternoon and punter Chris Gulla has two 50+ yard punts to his name so far.

The Nittany Lions are 0-5 on third down after converting 10 third downs last week against UCF. Penn State also has 23 yards of rushing on 8 attempts.

First Quarter: 0-0

Akron moves the ball deep into Penn State's end of the field thanks to four straight completions by Kyle Pohl as he went 5-of-7 for 62 yards in the first quarter. Back to back sacks would set up a field goal that was wide left keeping the game scoreless. After a short drive stalled for Penn State the Nittany Lions would drive 58 yards in four plays on their second possession of the game in 1:40 and a 22-yard pass to a wide open Bill Belton would make it 7-0. Hackenberg is 7-for-10 for 91 yards after the opening 15 minutes.

Pregame:

11:00 The new scoreboards are on full display early with new graphics, videos and reminders for various social media functions. So far the weather looks great but storms in the forecast will mean everyone will be keeping an eye on the sky throughout the game. Penn State units have started to take the field for warmups to a nice applause.

11:43

Both teams are off the field and it's just about time for the Blue Band here for a late arriving but continuing to fill Beaver Stadium crowd. The new videos feature the starting lineups like an NBC style broadcast featuring each player announcing his name and hometown. As expected Hackenberg and Franklin receive the loudest cheers.
