Penn State's Alyssa Naeher Makes Late Save to Send United States to Women's World Cup Final; Watch Party Announced

by on July 02, 2019 5:50 PM

Former Penn State goalie Alyssa Naeher's penalty-kick save in the 84th minute of regulation gave the United States its second-consecutive berth in the women's World Cup Final as the U.S. defeated England 2-1 on Tuesday afternoon.

Naeher has been solid in net for the majority of the tournament, posting key saves against France in the quarterfinals and another on Tuesday just prior to halftime with the United States having just taken a 2-1 lead over England. Naeher finds herself filling the shoes of longtime national team keeper Hope Solo, entering this World Cup cycle looking to respond to critics who questioned her ability to live up to Solo's legacy.

So far, Naeher has proven herself more than capable on the world's biggest stage and during some of the biggest moments the United States has faced.

The Americans will face the winner of Wednesday's game between the Netherlands and Sweden this Sunday in the women's World Cup final at 11 a.m. EST.

Penn State women's soccer announced following the game that Panzer Field will be open for a free viewing party on Sunday morning.

You can watch Naeher's save below as well as the local reaction.
