by on July 01, 2012 8:00 AM

Drivers should be aware of construction going on in downtown State College this summer.

PennDOT has released an update on a major project that will see changes starting Monday — Route 3018, a three-mile project that stretches from Route 26 to Atherton Street.

Once work is completed in late 2013, travel along Route 3018 is expected to be smoother, less congested and more efficient.

Per PennDOT, activity the week of July 2 will include:

  • Installation of pavement and base drain and sub-base grading and base-course placement on the left side from the Campbell Road intersection to the Atherton Street intersection.

  • Base and binder course placement on right turn lane near Atherton Street.

  • Curb and sidewalk placement at Atherton Street intersection.

  • Excavation and embankment placement from Research Drive to Blue Course Drive.

  • Utility contractors are performing aerial and underground relocation work throughout the project.

  • Drivers may encounter flaggers at various locations between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. Drivers should be alert for construction vehicles entering and exiting construction areas.

Motorists should be aware of bicyclists and pedestrians they my encounter in the roadway.

Overall work includes roadway-widening, addition of a center left turn lane, addition of marked bicycle lanes, new traffic signals, drainage improvements, waterline relocation and roadway paving. All work is weather and schedule dependent. HRI, Inc. of State College is the contractor on this $10.3 million project.

Also, the installation of pavement markers could cause some road delays.

Note: There will be no construction work Wednesday in observance of the Fourth of July.
