by on October 03, 2012 4:25 PM

A sexual assault was reported to the State College Police early Tuesday morning, having occurred sometime the night before.

Police are investigating a report of a woman being sexually assaulted by a man known to her. The woman sought medical treatment at Mount Nittany Medical Center, police said. No further information could be released.

Since Penn State's fall semester started on Aug. 27, seven sexual assaults have been reported to police. State College Police crunched the numbers of sexual assaults reported to the station between January and October of 2010, 2011 and 2012.

In 2010, 40 sex crimes were reported. The number rose to 47 in 2011 and so far this year, 45 sex crimes have been reported to police.

Numbers only reflect the number of crimes reported, not all that occurred.
