Police Say Reported Threat of Violence at Bellefonte High School Was a Hoax

Police and school officials said on Tuesday that there is no credible threat at Bellefonte Area High School after tips were received about possible violence at the school.

"First and foremost there is no credible threat of any type of violence whatsoever," Bellefonte Police Chief Shawn Weaver told WBLF's Tor Michaels. "Everybody can remain calm. It was a hoax."

Superintendent Michelle Saylor wrote in a message to families on Tuesday morning that the district had received tips through its reporting systems about a possible threat. Bellefonte police also posted a message to Facebook stating the reports were "being aggressively investigated."

"The District takes each tip seriously," Saylor wrote. "To date there is no credible evidence, however, we will continue to monitor the situation. Thank you to everyone who utilized the safety support systems as designed. The safety of our students is always our top priority."

A photo that appeared on social media included a caption to stay away from the high school on Friday because an unnamed student was going to shoot it up.

Weaver told Michaels that the investigation found there was never any threat of violence.

"Something very, very minor got blown way out of proportion," Weaver said. "Someone took it upon themselves to add to something that was really nothing."

Still, Weaver said, those who reported hearing about a threat did the right thing.

"We take everything very seriously, especially when it comes to our schools and our children," he said. "The most important part of the investigation revealed there is no threat. We’ll take care of mopping up the dirty laundry in the background."
