Professor's Film Aims to Generate Awareness of Sex Trafficking

Filmmaker and Penn State assistant professor of communications Pearl Gluck conducted two years of investigation and research into domestic sex trafficking before creating the fictionalized narrative of the film "The Turn Out."

Based on the testimony of sex trafficking survivors, anti-trafficking activists and truckers, the film tells the story of a trucker who must decide if he will stand up against trafficking at his truck stop.

"The Turn Out" will be shown at 6 p.m. Thursday at The State Theatre. Immediately following, a discussion moderated by Penn State faculty member Matt Jordan will include Chris Rattie, who composed music for the film, Sheridan Miyamoto of the Penn StateCollege of Nursing, state Rep. Teresa Fedor, local anti-trafficking activists and survivor-activist Barbara Freeman.

Freeman's story helped to inspire Gluck's film and she appears as an actress in "The Turn Out" as well.

The public is also invited to participate in helping women forced into the life of sex trafficking by donating a purse and filling it with items such as toiletries, tampons, gloves, hats, first-aid kits, and unused makeup. These filled purses will then be donated to The Freeman Project and Transitions of PA, two nonprofit organizations dedicated to assisting victims and survivors. Purses can be brought to the screening on Nov. 16 or dropped off to 315C Willard Building until Jan. 11, National Human Trafficking Awareness Day.

Centre County Report's Fabulous Flores talked with Freeman and Gluck about the film and the issue of sex trafficking in the United States.
