PSU Board Meeting Moved to Larger Space; Friday Agenda Released
by on January 17, 2012 1:41 PM

The Penn State trustees' next regular meeting, scheduled for Friday, will be held in the Nittany Lion Inn ballroom to accommodate increased public and media interest, the university reported.

Trustees typically meet in the inn's basement-level boardroom, a smaller space. It includes room for perhaps a few dozen observers, including reporters.

But the ballroom, on the first floor, is an expansive space with flexibility to hold dozens more. It's where the trustees gathered on Nov. 11, when they hosted their first regular, public meeting after the resignation of now-former President Graham Spanier and the firing of Joe Paterno as football coach.

The 32-member Board of Trustees normally meets every other month; its Friday meeting, on the University Park campus, will mark its second regular gathering since criminal charges were filed against former assistant football Jerry Sandusky and two administrators: Gary Schultz and Tim Curley.

A meeting agenda released to the news media on Tuesday includes no specific references to that situation, though.

Instead, it notes an overall report from Penn State President Rodney Erickson; an overview of intercollegiate athletics at the university; and informational items on undergraduate and graduate programs. A report on legal matters is listed, as well.

The agenda also outlines a number of relatively routine actions on facilities. Those include the awarding of contracts for the Pegula Ice Arena; the finalization of plans for Moore Building and Cedar Building renovations; and the appointment of an architect for future work at the university arboretum.

Late in the meeting, the board is expected to set its meeting dates for 2013 and elect its officers -- including chairman and vice chairman -- and executive committee for 2012. Per tradition, each board chairman and vice chairman usually serves three years before moving aside. Board Chairman Steve Garban and Vice Chairman John Surma have served two years apiece.

The Friday meeting is scheduled to begin at 10:15 a.m. It's expected to adjourn by 3 p.m.
