PSU Provost Asks Faculty for 'Discretion in Holding or Rescheduling' Thursday Classes
Penn State will not officially cancel classes Thursday as a memorial service for Joe Paterno is held in the Bryce Jordan Center.
But Provost Rob Pangborn has asked faculty members to "use their discretion in holding or rescheduling classes, recognizing the needs of students who wish to pay their respects by attending this ticketed event in person or by viewing it as members of the Penn State community on BTN.com," a university announcement reads.
The announcement, issued Tuesday morning, notes a university Faculty Senate policy allows students to miss class for "unavoidable circumstances," such as family emergencies and religious observances.
"The memorial service (for Paterno) is well within the intent of these provisions," the announcement reads. "For many students, the memorial will provide a positive opportunity to express grief and reinforce their understanding that they are members of a caring community."
Penn State has advised that students planning to miss class should contact their instructors as soon as possible.
