Renters Should Beware of Sublet Scams

by on December 01, 2018 5:00 AM

Like many Penn State students, around this time last fall, Katerina Vanledtje was trying to sublet her apartment as she prepared to study abroad in the spring.

She posted an ad on Craigslist and went back and forth with someone who said she was a grad student from China coming to Penn State. But as their emails went on, the person's communications grew stranger and Vanledtje eventually realized it was an attempted scam.

Kelly Mroz, director of Penn State Student Legal Services, said it's not an uncommon situation.

"Students are being asked to send money in an odd way or they're being offered something really amazing that it doesn't really exist. Those are probably the two most common types of scams we see," Mroz said.

Centre County Report's Jordan Cioppa has the story.
