A Saturn Ion hit two pedestrians early Thursday on East Calder Way, according to a State College police report.
No severe injuries were reported, but the pedestrians told police the driver had sped up right before striking them.
It happened about 1:50 a.m. between South Pugh and McAllister streets, the report shows. The pedestrians, Ethan Hunt and Scott Bevers, both 21-year-old local residents, had been standing in Calder Way but stepped aside as the Saturn approached, Bevers told police.
The car, however, picked up speed, hit Hunt and ran over Bevers' left foot, Bevers said. Hunt said the driver smiled during the incident. Hunt rolled onto and fell off the car, a witness told police.
After the impacts, the witness said, he chased but lost the vehicle. Police caught up with it later at 125 W. South Hills Ave., where they said they identified the driver as Brian M. Geckle, 26, of McClure, Pa.
Geckle denied involvement at first, then admitted he was the driver, police said. The pedestrians had been drunk and standing in the street, and so he drove into them, he told police, per the crash report.
Geckle did not feel he needed to stop and exchange information, the report indicates. It shows three passengers were in the car at the time.
Bevers said he and Hunt had consumed several beers apiece that night, according to the report. Both men refused to be transported to Mount Nittany Medical Center, though they were observed limping at the scene, police said.
An investigation was ongoing Thursday. No charges had been filed as of Thursday afternoon.
