Robbie Wine Resigns as Penn State Baseball Coach

When the Penn State baseball team takes the field next spring, it will be under the direction of a new coach.

Head coach Robbie Wine officially resigned from his position Tuesday afternoon. Wine was at the helm of the baseball program for nine years.

He followed up a Big Ten tournament appearance in 2012 with a sub-par 2013. The Nittany Lions finished the season with a 14-36 overall record and an ugly 4-20 conference slate.

Moving into Medlar Field at Lubrano Park in 2007 was followed by one of Wine’s best seasons as the Nittany Lions finished with a 31-26 record. The success was not sustainable though as three consecutive losing seasons followed.

Wine’s career with the Nittany Lions ends with a 228-261 record and a 111-135 conference mark.

In a statement, Wine says he intends to pursue other baseball opportunities.

“I am excited to start a new chapter in my life and look forward to what lies ahead. My experience at Penn State has made me a better coach and person. I thank the student-athletes I had the opportunity to coach, mentor and develop on and off the field. I wish them all the best of luck. They will always be a part of my family,” he said.

“I am proud of our accomplishments, growth and direction of the program under my leadership and I wish the best of luck to the next head coach, his staff and the student-athletes.”

A search to fill the vacant position will begin immediately.

“I am very appreciative of Robbie’s contributions to the baseball program and Penn State,” said athletic director David Joyner. “We thank Robbie for nine years of service to Penn State and wish him all the best.”
