Route 322 Lane Restrictions in Effect for Seven Mountains Construction Project

by on April 23, 2015 6:30 AM

State College residents heading out of town on Route 322 may find themselves tangling with traffic trouble -- pretty much through the summer.

Phase one of the Potters Mills Gap project is now well underway.

As a result traffic along a stretch of the highway crossing Seven Mountains, roughly 13 miles east of State College, is now down to one lane in each direction.

The left (passing) lanes are closed to accommodate the construction of a bridge over Route 322 at the Sand Mountain Road intersection.

The $2 million project is expected to take until October, assuming the weather cooperates.

The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) says 13,000 vehicles travel this section of Route 322 each day. Some 20,000 vehicles pass through there on Penn State home football game weekends.

A second phase of the project will involve building an interchange at Route 322 and Sand Mountain Road. That work should be completed by the end of 2016.

The third phase will be the most challenging. The plan calls for extending the existing four-lane highway from Seven Mountains into Potters Mills and adding an interchange at Route 144. Under the current timeline the entire process is expected to be finished sometime in 2019.
